Description

The PORTER UNION 2-Way Rucksack brings together Japanese bag-making craftsmanship, industrial workwear inspiration and versatile everyday functionality.

Produced by Yoshida & Co. under its renowned PORTER label, the UNION series draws inspiration from traditional labourers’ workwear, tool bags and utility equipment. Its distinctive design features multiple external storage compartments, exposed webbing, metal rivet detailing and an unmistakable lime-green Work Sports branding label.
Crafted from heavyweight-feeling polyester canvas in classic black, this bag offers a practical combination of durability, flexibility and understated utility styling.

The exterior features wide, reinforced nylon-webbing handles that allow the bag to be carried as a tote, while the adjustable shoulder straps provide conventional backpack functionality. The two carrying configurations make it particularly suitable for commuting, university, weekend travel or everyday use.

The front utility arrangement is one of the UNION collection’s defining features. A prominent upper storage pocket bearing the signature green label sits above additional accessible storage compartments, including a lower zipped pocket. External adjustment straps with ladder-lock buckles provide further functionality and contribute to the bag’s utilitarian character.

The main compartment uses a spacious open-top configuration with an adjustable securing strap, making it easy to access larger everyday belongings. Its flexible, soft-sided construction allows the bag to expand and conform to its contents without the rigidity of a conventional structured backpack.

Subtle details such as reinforced handle stitching, black webbing, riveted pocket construction and practical hardware reflect PORTER’s emphasis on durability and considered construction.
The all-black colourway is particularly versatile, pairing naturally with contemporary menswear, Japanese workwear, heritage clothing, relaxed tailoring and minimalist streetwear.

Unlike a conventional technical backpack, the UNION has a distinctive silhouette that is recognisable without relying on oversized branding.

Condition

Grade B

Grading type: Standard

Very good pre-owned condition, with ordinary cosmetic wear consistent with a previously owned everyday bag.

The exterior polyester canvas remains structurally sound and presents well overall. Minor areas of surface rubbing, small scuffs and subtle handling marks are visible, particularly across parts of the front lower compartment.

The black webbing handles appear strong and retain their intended structure, with reinforced attachment stitching visible. There are minor signs of normal friction and use around some webbing edges.

The signature green PORTER label remains intact and in good condition, with branding clearly legible.
The internal lining is a notable positive, appearing exceptionally clean in the supplied photographs, with virtually no obvious marks or staining.
Hardware, including the front zipper, adjustable strap buckles and fasteners, appears well maintained. Functionality has been confirmed by the seller.

Overall, a well-presented used example with cosmetic wear rather than significant damage.

About the Brand

Yoshida & Co. was founded in Tokyo in 1935 by Kichizo Yoshida and has become one of Japan’s most respected independent bag manufacturers.
The company introduced PORTER in 1962, developing a reputation for functional design, carefully selected materials and skilled Japanese manufacturing.

The name PORTER references hotel porters, who handle luggage professionally and understand the practical qualities required of a dependable bag.

Central to the company’s philosophy is Ichishin Nyukon, commonly translated as putting one’s heart and soul into every stitch. This principle reflects Yoshida’s emphasis on workmanship, longevity and attention to detail.
PORTER is especially known internationally for collections such as TANKER, HEAT, SMOKY and UNION, each interpreting functionality through a different material and design approach.

The UNION collection specifically takes inspiration from work clothing and tool-carrying equipment. Its functional external pockets, reinforced hardware and high-visibility green label reference industrial design rather than conventional luxury accessories.

The collection uses polyester canvas, selected for its practical properties and ability to deliver a robust workwear appearance without the weight of traditional cotton canvas.

The result is a series of bags that combines traditional Japanese manufacturing standards with an accessible, utilitarian aesthetic.
