Description
An outstanding example of Japanese utility design, this black PORTER TANKER briefcase combines military-inspired materials, practical compartmentalisation and the understated aesthetic that has made Yoshida & Co. internationally respected.
Originally introduced in 1983, the TANKER collection takes inspiration from the MA-1 flight jackets worn by the United States Air Force. Its defining feature is a distinctive three-layer fabric construction, combining a lightweight nylon twill outer with a cushioned intermediate layer and vivid rescue-orange nylon lining. The resulting material is soft, lightweight and recognisable for its subtle sheen and padded appearance.
This example is finished in classic black with a rectangular briefcase silhouette, twin padded carrying handles and two prominent front utility pockets. The exterior is deliberately understated, with tonal stitching, a silver-tone metal zipper and PORTER’s signature woven brand label positioned on the lower front pocket.
The interior opens to reveal the unmistakable orange TANKER lining, complemented by a large transparent storage compartment and additional fabric organisation sections. These contrasting materials are fundamental to the collection’s utilitarian character, making the bag as recognisable inside as it is outside.
Designed for daily practicality, the briefcase offers a versatile alternative to conventional leather business bags. The lightweight nylon construction, substantial external storage and generous main opening make it well suited to carrying documents, notebooks and everyday work essentials.
The black colourway also ensures the bag transitions naturally between workwear, contemporary streetwear and more refined everyday outfits. It pairs particularly well with Japanese heritage labels, technical outerwear, denim, tailored trousers and minimalist clothing.
This particular example presents in excellent pre-owned condition. The black nylon exterior is exceptionally well preserved with very limited evidence of wear. Both carrying handles remain structurally sound and present extremely well. The main zipper operates correctly, showing only slight cosmetic tarnishing, while the interior remains in excellent condition.
The original PORTER interior label is beautifully preserved. The exterior woven logo exhibits light surface wear, consistent with careful previous ownership.
A timeless, functional Japanese bag with the distinctive character and construction quality for which PORTER has become internationally recognised.
