Melbourne Vintage History

Melbourne has a strong second-hand clothing scene, but it is not one single thing.

There are vintage shops, designer resale spaces, op shops, market stalls, warehouse-style sellers, appointment-only showrooms and small online stores. Some focus on archival fashion. Some focus on old denim, band tees and sportswear. Some are closer to classic op shopping.

This page is not a full guide to every part of the scene. It is a Northern Outfitters view of the parts that connect with what we sell.

Melbourne has a long history with clothing, markets and small retail. Flinders Lane was closely tied to the city’s garment trade, while Queen Victoria Market officially opened in 1878 and remains one of the city’s best-known market spaces.

The current vintage scene sits across several areas.

Fitzroy is one of the obvious places to start. Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street and the surrounding streets have long been linked with independent retail, music, bars and second-hand clothing. Collingwood has a similar place in the scene, with Smith Street and nearby streets mixing older retail, food, studios and newer stores.

Brunswick and the inner north bring another side of it. More op shops, more everyday second-hand shopping and more people building wardrobes slowly. Chapel Street, Prahran and Windsor have a stronger fashion and resale identity, with vintage, designer resale and standard retail often sitting close together.

The CBD has its own version too. Vogue has highlighted Melbourne stores such as Dot Comme, Irvrsbl, Paris ’99 and Reina, with a focus on designer vintage and labels such as Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen.

Condé Nast Traveler has also pointed to areas like Fitzroy, Flinders Lane, Curtin House and Collingwood as part of Melbourne’s wider shopping mix.

There are also well-known names many Melbourne shoppers recognise. RetroStar. Shag. Lost and Found Market. Vintage Garage. Goodbyes. Mutual Muse. SWOP. Some are more traditional vintage. Some are resale. Some are broader second-hand clothing.

For us, the item matters first. Condition. Shape. Size. Construction. How it looks now. How easily it can be worn again.

A vintage T-shirt, a workwear jacket, a Japanese bag or an old piece of outerwear all have to pass the same basic test. Does it still deserve a place in someone’s wardrobe?
