Description
The colourway is particularly strong. A deep purple base is crossed with sky blue, teal green, cream, grey and restrained yellow lines, giving the check plenty of colour without becoming overly bright.
More importantly, this is an identifiable BEAMS PLUS release rather than an anonymous older style. Product number 11-01-1073-139 appears in BEAMS’ own April 2020 feature, where the short-sleeve Madras button-down was offered in yellow and purple and described as one of the label’s summer staples with a distinctly Ivy feel. Original Japanese retail was ¥10,000 plus tax.
The brand takes a straightforward American Ivy staple — the short-sleeve button-down — and rebuilds it in Japan using proper India Madras cotton. The result has far more character than a standard checked summer shirt: lightweight woven cotton, a soft natural texture, button-down collar, single chest pocket and a traditional longer shirttail hem.
The interior label identifies the fabric as India Madras Imported Fabric, while the care label confirms 100% cotton and Made in Japan.
Traditional Madras is especially appropriate here. BEAMS describes its Indian Madras shirting as breathable and lightweight, with the irregular texture associated with slower loom production and finishing methods.
Condition is excellent. There are no obvious stains, holes or damage, all buttons are present and the BEAMS PLUS and India Madras labels remain exceptionally clean. There is only extremely minor surface pilling in isolated areas which should be readily removable.
A strong warm-weather BEAMS PLUS piece that works with fatigues, chinos, shorts or denim and sits squarely within the Japanese interpretation of classic American Ivy and trad menswear.

About the Brand
BEAMS PLUS launched in 1999 as BEAMS’ menswear label devoted to enduring American clothing traditions. Its reference point is principally American dress from the mid-1940s through the mid-1960s, particularly Ivy, workwear, sportswear and military clothing, reinterpreted through Japanese manufacturing, fabrics and detailing.
Madras button-downs are consequently not a peripheral product for the label; they are closely aligned with the Ivy component of the BEAMS PLUS identity. BEAMS itself refers to India Madras shirting as a recurring spring/summer staple.
