Description

Archive WTAPS track jacket from the brand’s 2012 Spring/Summer era, officially titled “BETTER THAN YESTERDAY” and identified on the original garment label as the WARMUP JERSEY, specification number 121ATDT-CSM11.

Designed as WTAPS’ interpretation of a traditional athletic warm-up jacket, the piece combines sportswear proportions with the military and uniform references that run throughout Tetsu Nishiyama’s work. The body is constructed in contrasting black and deep navy jersey panels, finished with exposed tonal seam detailing and royal-blue striped ribbing at the collar, cuffs and hem.

An embroidered blue-and-black heraldic eagle crest sits at the left chest, providing restrained branding rather than the large graphic treatment associated with some WTAPS pieces. Further brand signatures include the red WTAPS side tab, external specification label near the hem and the period black-and-gold WTAPS BRAND / 201-205 neck label.

The original internal production label reads:

TITLE: BETTER THAN YESTERDAY
SPEC NO: 121ATDT-CSM11
AKA: WARMUP JERSEY
SPEC: JERSEY. COPO

The jacket is finished with a full front zip, concealed zip hand pockets and ribbed varsity-style trims. The resulting design sits between Japanese streetwear, vintage athletic apparel and WTAPS’ characteristic uniform-driven aesthetic.

A particularly clean surviving example in the desirable size L, with the embroidery, labels, ribbing and hardware all presenting extremely well.

The exact specification number is independently catalogued as a WTAPS navy track jacket.

Condition

Grade B

Grading type: Standard

Excellent near-new pre-owned condition with very little visible evidence of wear. The jersey body, contrast panels and exposed stitching present extremely well. Embroidered chest crest remains clean and sharply defined. Collar, cuffs and hem ribbing retain strong colour, shape and elasticity. Original WTAPS neck, specification and side labels are all present and in excellent condition. Front zip and pocket hardware operate correctly and present extremely well.

The garment has been lint rolled and minor surface pilling removed as part of preparation for sale.

Visible Flaws

No significant stains, holes, tears or structural damage observed. Very minor residual surface lint or signs of previous wear may remain on close inspection, consistent with a carefully worn pre-owned garment.

Please check all measurements and condition notes before purchasing. As most of our pieces are pre-owned, signs of previous wear may be present.

About the Brand

WTAPS was founded in Tokyo in 1996 by Tetsu Nishiyama, emerging from the Ura-Harajuku movement that also produced several of Japan’s most influential independent streetwear labels. WTAPS itself describes its beginnings as part of the countercultural Ura-Harajuku scene, built around Nishiyama’s desire to make clothing on his own terms rather than follow mainstream fashion.

The brand became particularly associated with the reinterpretation of military uniforms, workwear and utilitarian clothing through Japanese streetwear. Military terminology, specification numbers, insignia, garment labels and the recurring idea of clothing as a uniform became fundamental parts of the WTAPS design language. Nishiyama has also described skateboarding and the idea of clothing identifying members of a group almost like a uniform as important influences on his work.

This Warmup Jersey represents another side of that philosophy: rather than reproducing a field jacket or fatigue garment, WTAPS applies its uniform-based approach to classic team and training apparel.
